מתי לומר תפילת הדרך

When to Recite Tefilat HaDerech

Tefilat HaDerech is recited when traveling outside your city for a distance of approximately 2.5-4 miles (4-6.5 km), depending on custom. It should be said after leaving the city limits but within the first 2.5 miles of the journey. For a round trip on the same day, one recitation covers both directions. For overnight trips, say it each day of travel. The prayer is recited for car, plane, train, boat, or walking journeys.

The Text of the Prayer

The prayer begins: 'May it be Your will, Lord our God and God of our ancestors, that You lead us in peace and direct our steps in peace, and guide us in peace, and support us in peace, and bring us to our destination in life, joy, and peace.' It continues asking for protection from enemies and ambushes, and for God's blessing on the work of our hands. It concludes: 'Blessed are You, Lord, Who hears prayer.'

איך לומר את התפילה

How to Recite the Prayer

Tefilat HaDerech should ideally be said standing still and with concentration. If driving, you may pull over safely to recite it, or say it while the car is stopped at a red light. If this isn't possible, you may recite it while driving but with as much concentration as safely possible. On a plane, it's often recited after takeoff. Some have the custom to place a hand on the mezuzah before leaving home and then recite the prayer.

Flying and Modern Travel

For airplane travel, Tefilat HaDerech is recited after takeoff when the plane has reached cruising altitude. Some add it to their prayers in the airport before boarding. For cruises or long boat journeys, it's said at the beginning of the voyage. The prayer remains relevant in our modern age - perhaps even more so, as we travel farther and faster than our ancestors could have imagined.
