Frequently Asked Questions
The three daily Jewish prayers are Shacharit (morning prayer), Mincha (afternoon prayer), and Maariv or Arvit (evening prayer). These prayers correspond to the daily sacrifices that were offered in the Temple and were established by the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Shacharit should ideally be recited after sunrise (netz hachamah) and before the end of the fourth halachic hour of the day. The Shema portion has a stricter deadline and should be recited before the end of the third hour.
While Hebrew is the traditional and preferred language for prayer, Jewish law permits praying in any language you understand. However, certain prayers like the Shema are traditionally recited in Hebrew. Am Hazak provides both Hebrew text and English translations.
