About the Torah Portions

The Torah (Five Books of Moses) is divided into 54 weekly portions called parshiot (singular: parsha or parashah). Each Shabbat, Jewish communities around the world read the same portion, completing the entire Torah in one year.

The annual cycle begins and ends on Simchat Torah, a joyous holiday celebrating the completion and renewal of Torah reading. On some weeks, two portions are combined to ensure the cycle completes on time.

Each parsha is named after a significant word appearing near its beginning. The portions follow the narrative from Creation through the Israelites' journey to the edge of the Promised Land.
