Frequently Asked Questions About Purim Meshulash

Purim Meshulash (Triple Purim) occurs in walled cities like Jerusalem when the 15th of Adar (Shushan Purim) falls on Shabbat. Since certain Purim obligations cannot be performed on Shabbat, the celebrations are spread across three days: the Megillah is read on Friday (14th), Al HaNissim is recited and the special Torah portion is read on Shabbat (15th), and the festive meal and gift-giving take place on Sunday (16th).

The rabbis ruled that the Megillah cannot be read on Shabbat because one might carry it in the public domain, and Mishloach Manot and Matanot LaEvyonim are also not given on Shabbat. However, Al HaNissim is recited in the Amidah and Birkat Hamazon on Shabbat itself, since that is the actual date of Shushan Purim.
