Rosh Chodesh Adar 2026

The Talmud declares 'When Adar enters, joy increases,' because the month contains Purim. Adar is considered the most joyous month of the Jewish year. In a leap year, there are two months of Adar (Adar I and Adar II), and Purim is celebrated in Adar II. The mazal (sign) of Adar is Pisces (fish), symbolizing fertility and blessing.

Standard Rosh Chodesh prayers are recited: half Hallel, Ya'aleh V'Yavo, the special Torah reading, and Musaf. The atmosphere in the synagogue often becomes more joyful as the community anticipates Purim. In a leap year, Rosh Chodesh Adar I is observed with the same prayers, with the added joy of two months of Adar ahead.
