What is Birkat Hamazon?
Birkat Hamazon, also known as 'bentching' or Grace After Meals, is the blessing recited after eating a meal that includes bread. It is one of the few prayers explicitly commanded in the Torah: 'And you shall eat and be satisfied, and bless the Lord your God' (Deuteronomy 8:10). This blessing expresses gratitude to God for sustaining us.

When is Birkat Hamazon Required?
Birkat Hamazon is obligatory after eating bread (at least a kezayit, roughly the size of an olive). If you ate bread, you must recite the full Birkat Hamazon. For other foods made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt (like cake or pasta), a shorter blessing called 'Al HaMichya' is recited instead. For fruits, vegetables, and other foods, 'Borei Nefashot' is said.

The Four Blessings
Birkat Hamazon consists of four main blessings: 1) Birkat Hazan - thanking God for providing food to all creatures, attributed to Moses. 2) Birkat Ha'aretz - thanking God for the Land of Israel, attributed to Joshua. 3) Birkat Yerushalayim - praying for Jerusalem and the restoration of the Temple, attributed to David and Solomon. 4) Birkat Hatov V'hameitiv - thanking God for His goodness, added by the Sages.

Zimun: The Invitation
When three or more men eat together, they begin Birkat Hamazon with 'zimun' - an invitation to bless together. One person leads and says 'Rabotai nevareich' (Gentlemen, let us bless), and the others respond. With ten or more men, God's name is added to the zimun. Women eating together may also form their own zimun.

Additions for Special Occasions
Special paragraphs are added on various occasions: 'Retzei' on Shabbat, 'Ya'aleh V'yavo' on holidays and Rosh Chodesh, 'Al HaNissim' on Chanukah and Purim. At a wedding celebration during the week of sheva brachot, the seven wedding blessings are added after Birkat Hamazon.

Practical Tips
Recite Birkat Hamazon where you ate the meal. If you forget whether you bentched, you should bentch again (if you ate until satiation). Many have the custom to hold a cup of wine during Birkat Hamazon, especially on Shabbat and holidays. Try not to interrupt in the middle of bentching. If you're in a rush, the four main blessings are the essential core.
