Frequently Asked Questions About Chanukah Prayers

Three blessings are recited on the first night: the blessing over the candles (Lehadlik Ner), the blessing for the miracles (She'asah Nisim), and the Shehecheyanu (for reaching this season). On subsequent nights, only the first two blessings are said.

Al Hanissim ('For the Miracles') is a special paragraph added to the Amidah prayer and Birkat Hamazon (Grace After Meals) throughout Chanukah. It thanks God for the miracles performed for the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil.

Full Hallel is recited every day of Chanukah, unlike other holidays where half Hallel may be said. This is because each day of Chanukah commemorates a separate miracle, making each day independently significant.

Chanukah candles are traditionally lit at nightfall (approximately 25-30 minutes after sunset), though some light at sunset. On Friday, candles are lit before Shabbat candles, and on Saturday night, after Havdalah. The candles should burn for at least 30 minutes after nightfall.
