הִנְנִי מְכַוֵּן בַּהֲנָחַת תְּפִלִּין לְקַיֵּם מִצְוַת בּורְאִי. שֶׁצִּוָּנוּ לְהָנִיחַ תְּפִלִּין. כַּכָּתוּב בְּתורָתו וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאות עַל יָדֶךָ. וְהָיוּ לְטטָפת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ. וְהֵם אַרְבַּע פַּרְשִׁיּות אֵלּוּ. שְׁמַע. וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמעַ. קַדֶּשׁ. וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ. שֶׁיֵּשׁ בָּהֶם יִחוּדו וְאַחְדוּתו יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמו בָּעולָם. וְשֶׁנִּזְכּר נִסִּים וְנִפְלָאות. שֶׁעָשה עִמָּנוּ בְּהוצִיאָנוּ מִמִּצְרָיִם. וַאֲשֶׁר לו הַכּחַ וְהַמֶּמְשָׁלָה בָּעֶלְיונִים וּבַתַּחְתּונִים לַעֲשות בָּהֶם כִּרְצונו:
Behold, I intend with the laying of tefillin to fulfill the commandment of my Creator, who commanded us to lay tefillin, as it is written in His Torah: And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes; and they are these four portions: Shema, And it shall be if you hearken, Sanctify, And it shall be when He brings you, which contain His unity and oneness, blessed be His name in the world, and that we remember the miracles and wonders that He performed for us when He brought us out of Egypt, and that to Him belong the power and dominion in the upper and lower realms to do with them according to His will:
וְצִוָּנוּ לְהָנִיחַ עַל הַיָּד לְזִכְרון זְרועַ הַנְּטוּיָה. וְשֶׁהִיא נֶגֶד הַלֵּב לְשַׁעְבֵּד בָּזֶה תַּאֲוַת וּמַחְשְׁבות לִבֵּנוּ לַעֲבודָתו יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמו. וְעַל הָראשׁ נֶגֶד הַמּחַ. שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה שֶׁבְּמחִי עִם שְׁאָר חוּשַׁי וְכחותַי כֻּלָּם יִהְיוּ מְשֻׁעְבָּדִים לַעֲבודָתו יִתְבָּרַךְ שְׁמו:
And He commanded us to place it on the hand as a remembrance of the outstretched arm, and that it is opposite the heart to thereby subjugate the desires and thoughts of our heart to His service, blessed be His name; and on the head opposite the brain, so that the soul in my brain, along with all my senses and faculties, may all be subjugated to His service, blessed be His name:
וּמִשֶּׁפַע מִצְוַת תְּפִלִּין יִתְמַשֵּׁךְ עָלַי לִהְיות לִי חַיִּים אֲרֻכִים וְשֶׁפַע קדֶשׁ וּמַחֲשָׁבות קְדושׁות. בְּלִי הִרְהוּר חֵטְא וְעָון כְּלָל. וְשֶׁלּא יְפַתֵּנוּ וְלא יִתְגָּרֶה בָּנוּ יֵצֶר הָרָע. וְיַנִיחֵנוּ לַעֲבד אֶת ה' כַּאֲשֶׁר עִם לְבָבֵנוּ. וִיהִי רָצון מִלְּפָנֶיךָ. ה' אֱלהֵינוּ וֵאלהֵי אֲבותֵינוּ. שֶׁתְּהֵא חֲשׁוּבָה מִצְוַת הֲנָחַת תְּפִלִּין לִפְנֵי הַקָּדושׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא. כְּאִלּוּ קִיַּמְתִּיהָ בְּכָל פְּרָטֶיהָ וְדִקְדּוּקֶיהָ וְכַוָּנותֶיהָ וְתַרְיַ"ג מִצְות הַתְּלוּיִם בָּהּ. אָמֵן סֶלָה:
And from the abundance of the commandment of tefillin, may there extend to me long life and an abundance of holiness and holy thoughts, without any notion of sin or iniquity at all; and may the evil inclination not entice us nor provoke us, and may it allow us to serve the Lord as our heart desires; and may it be Your will, Lord our God and God of our fathers, that the commandment of laying tefillin be considered before the Holy One, blessed be He, as if I had fulfilled it with all its details, minutiae, intentions, and the six hundred thirteen commandments dependent upon it; Amen, selah:

Before tying it, he shall recite the blessing:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה'. אֱלהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעולָם. אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְותָיו. וְצִוָּנוּ לְהָנִיחַ תְּפִלִּין:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to lay tefillin:
לפני שמהדק הרצועה על ראשו יאמר:
Before tightening the strap on his head, he shall say:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה'. אֱלהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעולָם. אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְותָיו. וְצִוָּנוּ עַל מִצְוַת תְּפִלִּין:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us regarding the commandment of tefillin:
ומהדקו בראשו ואומר:
And he tightens it on his head and says:
בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוד מַלְכוּתו לְעולָם וָעֶד:
Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom forever and ever:
וּמֵחָכְמָתְךָ אֵל עֶלְיון תַּאֲצִיל עָלַי. וּמִבִּינָתְךָ תְּבִינֵנִי. וּבְחַסְדְּךָ תַּגְדִּיל עָלַי. וּבִגְבוּרָתְךָ תַּצְמִית אויְבַי וְקָמַי. וְשֶׁמֶן הַטּוב תָּרִיק עַל שִׁבְעָה קְנֵי הַמְּנורָה. לְהַשְׁפִּיעַ טוּבְךָ לִבְרִיּותֶיךָ. פּותֵחַ אֶת יָדֶךָ וּמַשבִּיעַ לְכָל חַי רָצון:
And from Your wisdom, Most High God, may You bestow upon me; and with Your understanding, may You grant me insight; and with Your kindness, may You increase it upon me; and with Your might, may You subdue my enemies and adversaries; and may You pour the good oil upon the seven branches of the menorah, to extend Your goodness to Your creatures; You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing:
אחר כך יכרוך שלש כריכות על האצבע האמצעי ויכרוך בתחלה כריכה אחת בפרק האמצעי ואח"כ אחת בראש פרק התחתון ואחת בסוף פרק התחתון ואומר:
Afterward, he shall wrap three windings around the middle finger, first one winding at the middle joint, then one at the top of the lower joint, and one at the end of the lower joint, and say:
וְאֵרַשתִּיךְ לִי לְעולָם:
And I will betroth you to Me forever:
וְאֵרַשתִּיךְ לִי בְּצֶדֶק וּבְמִשְׁפָּט וּבְחֶסֶד וּבְרַחֲמִים:
And I will betroth you to Me with righteousness and justice, and with kindness and mercy:
וְאֵרַשתִּיךְ לִי בֶּאֱמוּנָה. וְיָדַעְתְּ אֶת ה':
And I will betroth you to Me with faithfulness, and you shall know the Lord:
אחר הנחת תפלין יאמר זה:
After putting on the tefillin, he shall say this:
וַיְדַבֵּר ה' אֶל משֶׁה לֵּאמר:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
קַדֶּשׁ לִי כָל בְּכור פֶּטֶר כָּל רֶחֶם בִּבְנֵי יִשרָאֵל בָּאָדָם וּבַבְּהֵמָה לִי הוּא:
Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first issue of every womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast; it is Mine:
וַיּאמֶר משֶׁה אֶל הָעָם זָכור אֶת הַיּום הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר יְצָאתֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים. כִּי בְּחזֶק יָד הוצִיא ה' אֶתְכֶם מִזֶּה. וְלא יֵאָכֵל חָמֵץ:
And Moses said to the people: Remember this day when you went out of Egypt, from the house of bondage, for with a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place; and no leavened bread shall be eaten:
הַיּום אַתֶּם יצְאִים. בְּחדֶשׁ הָאָבִיב:
Today you are going out, in the month of Aviv:
וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ ה' אֶל אֶרֶץ הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַחִתִּי וְהָאֱמרִי וְהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי. אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבתֶיךָ לָתֶת לָךְ. אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ. וְעָבַדְתָּ אֶת הָעֲבדָה הַזּאת בַּחדֶשׁ הַזֶּה:
And it shall be when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall perform this service in this month:
שִׁבְעַת יָמִים תּאכַל מַצּת. וּבַיּום הַשְּׁבִיעִי חַג לה':
Seven days you shall eat matzah, and on the seventh day there shall be a festival to the Lord:
מַצּות יֵאָכֵל אֵת שִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים. וְלא יֵרָאֶה לְךָ חָמֵץ וְלא יֵרָאֶה לְךָ שאר בְּכָל גְּבֻלֶךָ:
Matzah shall be eaten during the seven days, and no leavened bread shall be seen with you, nor shall leaven be seen with you within all your borders:
וְהִגַּדְתָּ לְבִנְךָ בַּיּום הַהוּא לֵאמר. בַּעֲבוּר זֶה עָשה ה' לִי בְּצֵאתִי מִמִּצְרָיִם:
And you shall tell your son on that day, saying: It is because of what the Lord did for me when I went out of Egypt:
וְהָיָה לְךָ לְאות עַל יָדְךָ וּלְזִכָּרון בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ. לְמַעַן תִּהְיֶה תּורַת ה' בְּפִיךָ. כִּי בְּיָד חֲזָקָה הוצִאֲךָ ה' מִמִּצְרָיִם:
And it shall be for you as a sign upon your hand and as a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Torah of the Lord may be in your mouth, for with a strong hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt:
וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת הַחֻקָּה הַזּאת לְמועֲדָהּ. מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה:
And you shall keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year:
וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִאֲךָ ה' אֶל אֶרֶץ הַכְּנַעֲנִי כַּאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לְךָ וְלַאֲבתֶיךָ. וּנְתָנָהּ לָךְ:
And it shall be when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you:
וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ כָּל פֶּטֶר רֶחֶם לה'. וְכָל פֶּטֶר שֶׁגֶר בְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה לְךָ הַזְּכָרִים לה':
That you shall set apart to the Lord every first issue of the womb, and every first offspring of a beast that you have; the males belong to the Lord:
וְכָל פֶּטֶר חֲמר תִּפְדֶּה בְשה. וְאִם לא תִפְדֶּה וַעֲרַפְתּו. וְכל בְּכור אָדָם בְּבָנֶיךָ תִּפְדֶּה:
And every firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem:
וְהָיָה כִּי יִשְׁאָלְךָ בִנְךָ מָחָר לֵאמר מַה-זּאת. וְאָמַרְתָּ אֵלָיו. בְּחזֶק יָד הוצִיאָנוּ ה' מִמִּצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים:
And it shall be when your son asks you tomorrow, saying, What is this? that you shall say to him: With a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of bondage:
וַיְהִי כִּי הִקְשָׁה פַרְעה לְשַׁלְּחֵנוּ. וַיַּהֲרג ה' כָּל בְּכור בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם. מִבְּכר אָדָם וְעַד בְּכור בְּהֵמָה. עַל כֵּן אֲנִי זבֵחַ לה' כָּל פֶּטֶר רֶחֶם הַזְּכָרִים וְכָל בְּכור בָּנַי אֶפְדֶּה:
And it came to pass when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, that the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of beast; therefore I sacrifice to the Lord every male that first opens the womb, and every firstborn of my sons I redeem:
וְהָיָה לְאות עַל יָדְכָה וּלְטוטָפת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ. כִּי בְּחזֶק יָד הוצִיאָנוּ ה' מִמִּצְרָיִם:
And it shall be as a sign upon your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for with a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.
